YOU Are Your Only Competition

competition growth race of life relationships self improvement Jul 31, 2020

In the relentless race of life, feelings of inadequacy, self-criticism, and constant comparison can take a toll on one's mental well-being. This narrative aims to redefine the race of life and suggests that the real competition is with oneself. Drawing inspiration from an African proverb, it emphasizes the need to run one's race and continually improve without being weighed down by external comparisons.

The Race of Life Redefined

Choosing Your Race

Humans are not bound by an instinctual need to wake up running and chasing like animals. Instead, they are beings on a journey to discover and become their best selves. The race of life is not about survival instincts but about personal growth and self-discovery.

Two Models:

  1. 1. Run and Chase Model - The Outside-In Approach:

   - Fueled by fear, perceiving the world as more dangerous and oneself as less capable.

   - Operates on fight-or-flight instincts, emphasizing survival over growth.

  1.  Grow Grace by Grace - Inside Out:

   - Focuses on imperfection, self-discovery, and learning grace by grace.

   - Acknowledges that the only competition is oneself, striving to understand strengths through confronting weaknesses.

Seeing Others as Teachers

  1.   Not Competing Against Others:

   - Rejects the notion of external competitors.

  1.  Internal Threats:

   - Recognizes that the biggest threats are internal, residing within one's thoughts.

  1.   Criticizing Voices:

   - Understands that the harshest critics often reside within one's own mind.

See What Your Life Is Trying To Teach You:

Four Categories:

Examines how physical/chemical, mental/emotional, social/cultural, and spiritual/inspirational aspects contribute to anxiety. Asks reflective questions to understand the impact of each category on one's life.

Physical/Chemical:

   - Explores the role of the body, chemical changes, and their impact on anxiety.

   - Considers gratitude for the body's benefits and the trials it presents.

Mental/Emotional:

   - Evaluates thinking patterns and emotional well-being's influence.

   - Reflects on vulnerability, trials, and blessings related to emotions.

Social/Cultural:

   - Explores external influences from people and culture.

   - Considers gratitude for relationships and community, along with associated trials.

Spiritual/Inspirational:

   - Examines the connection to a higher power, purpose, and inspiration.

   - Reflects on using spiritual beliefs to find peace and the motivational power of a "Deeper Yes."

By recognizing that the only true competition is oneself, individuals can redefine their journey in the race of life. Embracing self-discovery, growth, and gratitude, this perspective fosters a healthier mental state, freeing individuals from the burdens of constant comparison and self-criticism.
