Three Subtle Skills That Strengthen Relationships When Social Distancing

As the pandemic continues, social distancing has become a prolonged practice impacting individuals differently. While for some it feels like a temporary break, for others, it has led to heightened anxiety, loneliness, and relationship conflicts. Despite the physical distance, there are subtle social skills that we can practice to foster closer connections and understanding during these challenging times.

  1. Practice Showing Up for Others

- Presence Beyond Physical Proximity: Just physically being present is not enough. True presence involves being there with your mind, heart, and soul. Whether in person or on a call, focus on the person, the conversation, and the context.

- Undivided Attention: The Japanese word for listening includes symbols for undivided attention, ears, eyes, you, and heart. It emphasizes the importance of being fully engaged and attentive.

- Being Present in Spirit: Beyond hearing words, genuinely care about what is being said. People can sense authenticity, and being present fosters trust and deeper connections.

- Show Up Consistently: Consistent presence builds trust. Make an effort to show up for others regularly, redeeming the "prizes" of deeper connections and understanding.

  1. Practice Taking the Place of Others

- Empathy as Understanding: Human beings have a unique ability to empathize by trying to understand others' experiences. Empathy means getting into the path of others, even when we haven't had their specific experiences.

- Challenge Yourself: Take the place of others by actively listening from their frame of reference, asking questions that help you understand their experiences on a deeper level.

- Understanding and Compassion: By taking the place of others, we gather more information and develop compassion. These qualities speak directly to the heart, fostering genuine connections.

  1. Practice Being a Faithful Witness of The Other

- Namaste – Seeing the Divine in Others: The word Namaste, a greeting used in parts of India and yoga practices, means "I see the divine in you." To be a faithful witness involves seeing through the noise and recognizing the divine within each person.

- Treating Conversations as Witnessing: Imagine treating conversations with loved ones as if you were a witness to their lives. Listen differently, interpret their words and actions in a positive light, and look for stories that truly define them.

- History of Your Loved Ones: Consider how you would listen and interact if you were writing the lasting history of your spouse or significant other. Be a faithful witness to their experiences, stories, and differences.

- Transformation Through Witnessing: Being a faithful witness has the potential to bring about significant personal transformation. It changes how you listen, interpret, and engage with the important people in your life.

In a time of physical distancing, these subtle skills can bridge the gap and strengthen relationships by creating a deeper sense of connection and understanding. Remember, it's not just about being physically close but actively remaining socially closer.
