Teaching Why Commitments Are Good for You!

Research shows that younger generations are finding it harder to commit to things that may seem to limit their independence or supposed freedom. The avoidance of commitments to marriage, dating, religion, careers, communities, and families may have long-term consequences, hindering the development of interdependence.

In David Brooke’s book "The Second Mountain," he discusses the concept that freedom can be either a freedom "from" something or a freedom "to" do something. He argues that the emphasis on individualism over interdependence leads to more freedom "from" responsibility to others rather than an obligation "to" others.

Here are four reasons why discussing and encouraging commitments are essential:

Commitment: Builds Our Identity

Commitments shape where we spend time and with whom, defining our activities, beliefs, and traditions. Personal titles like husband, father, friend, coach, speaker, and church member stem from commitments. Distinct commitments tie us to people, creating obligations and responsibilities.

Commitment: Enables More Meaning and Purpose

Commitment helps prioritize what is important, fostering a more interdependent worldview. It transforms us into contributors, fostering hope and a sense of purpose. By placing people before ourselves, commitment promotes a culture of giving.

Commitment: Drives Human Growth and Potential

Commitment forces a choice between suffering and growth. Growth in commitments elevates personal development and achievement. A lack of commitment may hinder growth and result in a shift of focus without true elevation.

Commitment: Builds Our Moral Character

Living up to commitments is challenging and forces us to finish what we've started. Commitments are about doing what is right, not just what is fun or exciting. Character is built by prioritizing principles over moods, desires, and needs.

Commitments build character by demanding work and a sense of losing oneself in efforts for something or someone more important. While commitments may not always bring fun, they bring joy and contribute to a clearer and more confident approach to life's challenges.
