Knowing Which Feelings to Follow: Trust Your Gut or What?

Navigating through feelings and instincts can be complex, but understanding and managing them is crucial for effective decision-making. Here are four tools to help determine which feelings to trust.

  1. Allow the Need to React to Pass Over You

Survival Instincts:

Understand that feelings and instincts are designed for survival.

Not all natural instincts are beneficial; discern between immediate threats and non-threatening situations.

Caveat:

If your life is genuinely at risk, trust immediate instincts; otherwise, let the initial wave pass to gain clarity.

  1. Identify the Source of Your Feelings

Diverse Origins:

Differentiate feelings arising from physical, mental, and spiritual sources.

Recognize that some feelings, while momentarily pleasing, may not contribute to long-term well-being.

  1. Let Your Highest Self Be Your Guide

Highest Self vs. Human Self:

Acknowledge the distinction between prompts from your highest self and human self.

Assess feelings based on their alignment with lasting peace, personal growth, values, and principles.

  1. Remember You’re in For The Long-Term Game

Short-Term vs. Long-Term:

Human nature tends to focus on short-term gains and immediate gratification.

Embrace the discipline required for the long-term game, fostering continuous learning and growth.

Consider the implications of your choices on your future self and strive for a positive legacy.

Navigating feelings involves a delicate balance between immediate reactions and thoughtful consideration for long-term well-being. Trusting your gut becomes more reliable when aligned with principles, values, and the pursuit of lasting peace and personal growth.
