How to Stop Having the Same Arguments With Your Partner

arguments improve communication improve relationships relationships stop contention Feb 25, 2019

If you find yourself stuck in a cycle of repeating arguments with your partner, it's essential to recognize that change is possible. The key lies in breaking the pattern of responding the same way. To gain insights and improve your communication, consider asking yourself the following four questions:

  1. What Part of the Problem/Solution Was I? (Awareness)

Evaluate your self-awareness by understanding how you contribute to the situation. Recognizing your impact on the argument is crucial. Grow your self-insight, acknowledging both your strengths and weaknesses, and understanding how they affect the dynamics of the conversation.

  1. What Were the Deeper Needs and Wants of the Other? (Understanding)

Dig deeper to understand your partner's perspective. Identify the underlying issues and triggers that set off the argument. Explore their feelings, thoughts, and needs. Uncover what was genuinely going on in their mind during the conversation.

  1. What Are Our Highest Goals and Desires in This Relationship? (Vision)

Examine the vision you hold for your relationship. Reconnect with what matters most as a couple. Define the high standards that should guide your actions and responses within the relationship.

  1. What Is the Most Important Thing I Can Do Right Now to Become the Person I Most Want to Become? (Conscience)

Prioritize actions based on your conscience and values. Determine the immediate steps you can take to align with your principles. Act with character, whether it involves apologizing, serving, giving space, or any other conscientious response.

By addressing these questions in sequence, you can illuminate the dynamics of your relationship and gain a new direction for resolving issues. While challenges may persist, these questions serve as a guiding light, preventing arguments from continuing in ignorance and steering your relationship towards positive change.
