Four Things Your Boredom Is Trying to Tell You

Boredom Defined...

“It is a deeply unpleasant state of 'unmet arousal': you are aroused rather than despondent, but, for one or more reasons, your arousal cannot be met or directed." - Dr Neel Burton, MD

Boredom isn’t necessarily negative; instead, it can signal an opportunity for personal growth and enrichment. In our technology-driven era, boredom has become a rarity, but with the current social distancing measures, it is making a comeback. Here are four things your boredom might be trying to tell you.

  1. Step Up and Lead Your Own Life

Individuals feeling bored often share a common trait – a sense of limited freedom to lead their lives. Overplanning can lead to children and teenagers feeling bored due to constrained lives. Boredom can stem from a perceived lack of control or freedom, even resembling the experience of prisoners. Lack of experience, opportunity, resources, and money can contribute to a feeling of stagnation.

TO DO: Take charge of your life, grow your experiences, resources, and maturity to lead independently.

  1. Manage Your Expectations & Focus

Boredom arises when expectations are not met, and managing expectations becomes challenging. Animals don’t experience boredom as their expectations are more instinctual and immediate. Boredom may occur when focusing and managing one's thoughts become difficult.

TO DO: Recognize and evaluate your expectations. Focus on what can be done at the present moment.

  1. Cultivate More Creativity & Curiosity

Individuals easily bored may struggle with being creative and curious about the world. Strengthening creativity, imagination, and curiosity can alleviate boredom. Over-scheduling children can hinder the development of creativity and curiosity. Technology can reduce the time spent exploring and figuring things out independently.

TO DO: Use moments of boredom to explore creative activities, find answers to questions, and solve problems independently.

  1. Pump Up Your Motivation & Passion

Boredom often indicates a lack of motivation and passion to act on something. Motivation and drive are fueled by expectations and curiosity; without them, actions may falter. Boredom might be a signal to search for deeper meaning and purpose in life.

TO DO: Identify activities that bring joy, delve into the thicker aspects of life, and explore what truly makes you happy and fulfilled.
