Do You Have The Character to Forge A Lasting Love?

build character character deepen love lasting love love marriage Feb 16, 2018

In the early stages of a relationship, we often focus on finding the right "chemistry" with another person, overlooking the importance of character in creating a lasting bond. While chemistry sparks initial attraction, it's the depth of character and the practice of charity that sustain a relationship in the long run. Here are six time-tested practices to strengthen character and deepen love, regardless of the stage of your relationship:

  1. Be Wholehearted

Principle: Wholeheartedness.

Many relationships suffer because we approach them half-heartedly, taking them for granted or fearing vulnerability. To build lasting love, burn your ships—trust that you are lovable and capable of making love work.

  1. Loosen Your Grip

Principle: Faith Not Fear, Compassion Not Control.

Vulnerability often triggers the desire to control, leading to perfectionism and demands. Instead of trying to control your partner, focus on addressing your own fears. Loosen your grip, open your heart, and share your secrets.

  1. Appreciate What Is

Principle: Appreciation is learning to love the "Given Gift" not the "Expected Gift."

Relationships are often burdened by unrealistic expectations. Appreciate the given gift rather than fixating on unmet expectations. Find joy in what you have, and let go of what you expected.

  1. Lift by Lowering

Principle: Authenticity means we talk from our "Real Self," not our "Ego."

Authenticity involves leading from your highest principles and values, not succumbing to ego-driven reactions. Spend more time acknowledging the positive aspects of your marriage and act from your authentic self.

  1. Open Your Heart

Principle: Empathy is your ability to get "within" the path of another.

Practice empathy by actively listening and finding compassion for your partner's pain. Spend more time connecting by looking into your partner's eyes. Shutting your "Cakehole" (mouth) and opening your heart can bridge emotional gaps.

  1. "Act" With Charity**

Principle: Acting with Charity toward another is the highest form of relating.

Character involves taking action. Act with charity—participate, help, practice, be loving, plan ahead, forget gripes, and get moving in your marriage. Doing more than belonging, caring, believing, being fair, forgiving, and dreaming fosters a strong and enduring connection.

In building lasting love, cultivating character and practicing these principles can be more powerful than relying solely on chemistry. While chemistry may ignite the spark, it's the enduring flame of character and charity that lights the way for a love that stands the test of time.
