Deepening Your Connection to Others

build relationships connect connection safe relationships Oct 28, 2019

We find ourselves in a paradoxical era, where despite unprecedented connectivity, many of us feel increasingly alone. The desire for deeper relationships is universal, yet often, we find ourselves entangled in superficial connections. To truly deepen our relationships, we must transform the way we relate to others. Here are four guidelines to enhance your ability to form meaningful connections:

Deal With Your Distractions

The depth of a relationship is limited by your ability to focus. Identify and address the distractions hindering your connection with others. Turn off the phone, step away from constant communication, and be present in the moment. Make a conscious effort to prioritize the person in front of you, making them feel like the sole focus of your attention.

Make It Safe For Others to Change

Creating a safe space is essential for deepening connections. Be a person others feel comfortable talking to. Foster an environment where individuals can be their authentic selves without judgment. Embrace change positively, allowing others to shed their old ways and evolve. Reduce competition in conversations, avoid debates, and provide space for others to make choices.

Disarm Your Default Defenses

Identify and disarm default defense mechanisms that prevent vulnerability and hinder deep connections. Recognize common defenses such as fight or flight, assumptions, defensiveness, reactivity, intellectualizing, and interrupting. By shedding these defensive responses, you open the door to genuine and vulnerable interactions.

Discern What Really Needs To Be Said

In a world filled with opinions, effective communication is crucial. A wise Arab proverb offers three guards to protect your speech:

  1. Is it true?
  2. Is it kind?
  3. Is it necessary?

Allow these guards to filter your words, ensuring that what you say adds value and promotes understanding. If a 'no' is answered to any of these questions, refrain from letting the communication pass your lips.

By incorporating these four deepening do's into your interactions, you can foster more profound connections and create a richer tapestry of relationships in your life.
