6 Lessons of Connecting with Grandkids I Learned on a Family Trip

Every grandparent aspires to be the best they can be, fostering strong relationships with their grandchildren. However, navigating the role of a grandparent comes with unique challenges, especially since most of us haven't had the opportunity to take a class on grandparenting. Here are six valuable lessons I learned during an 8-day vacation with my 5 ½ grandchildren:

  1. Become Intentional in Your Relationship with Grandkids

Creating strong connections with grandchildren requires intentionality. Much like achieving personal goals, being intentional about positively influencing your grandkids is key. It involves setting aside agendas and adopting a new agenda focused on positively influencing their lives.

  1. Be Present in Their Micro Moments

Happiness in relationships is often built on micro-moments—short, meaningful interactions that create lasting memories. It's not about expensive trips; rather, it's about being fully present in their lives. Turn off distractions, lose the phone, and invest 8 seconds at a time to make a deep and lasting connection.

  1. Meet Them Where They Are

Influence requires presence. Whether they're in the pool or engaged in activities, connect by immersing yourself in their world. Notice when they're circling for something to do and find ways to engage with their interests. Avoid the idea that they should come to you; instead, go where they are.

  1. Think Connection Not Correction

Grandparents need to focus on connection rather than correction. While correction may be necessary, a solid connection ensures a lasting relationship. Instead of lecturing, create a true and sincere connection with your grandkids. They come for love, not lessons.

  1. Use Stories to Connect the Past, Present, and Future

Grandparents hold the history of the family, and sharing stories is a powerful way to connect generations. Stories captivate attention, and linking the past to the present helps grandchildren understand their roots. Use narratives to highlight the strengths and traits of ancestors, making the past relevant to the future.

  1. Be A Consistent Source of Love in Their Life

Every human needs to feel loved, capable, that they belong, and that they are safe. Grandparents play a crucial role in meeting these basic needs. Be a consistent source of unconditional love through touch, words, and actions. In a world of constant change, a loving grandparent provides stability and support.

In essence, the key to connecting with grandkids lies in intentionality, presence, adaptability, genuine connection, storytelling, and being a consistent source of love. These lessons, learned from real experiences, can guide grandparents toward creating meaningful and lasting relationships with their grandchildren.
